All the volunteers at Epona's Pastures strive to continue learning as much as possible about our equine friends. It has been said many times before that a horse owner will never stop learning about horses.
With so many different approaches and schools of thought about training and welfare we feel that is important to learn as much as possible from each area and apply the knowledge that is right for you.

As part of their self education program, Inger and Asher attended one of the "Trimming Workshops" held by Andrew Bowe. Although Andrew Bowe specialises in Barefoot Trimming and does explain why he believes it is better for the horse, this clinic is not just for 'barefoot' horse owners. Anyone who is interested in learning about the horse's hooves, the different functions of the hooves and how to trim your horse's hooves between farrier visits will enjoy this course.
The course takes a full day and you have the option to bring your own horse for the trimming practice in the afternoon (without shoes). The course consists of theory in the morning with excellent insight and explanations of the hoof's parts, functionality and common problems. There is a full explanation on correct trimming with diagrams and participants are given the chance to put their skills into practice on cadaver legs before the afternoon trimming session on their own horses.  All the tools and equipment you
need is provided on the day.

..... Andrew takes the time to demonstrate some of the trimming techniques to the group.

.....Andrew's wife "Nicky" is there to assist and stops to give Asher a few pointers to help her along.

Asher gains her confidence and gets the hang of it.....

The results speak for themselves... we won't be sacking our farrier just yet, but Inger and Asher have at least now got the skills to do some basic trimming and can smooth over cracks and rough edges to prevent further damage between the farrier's visits.
